Printing a Cookbook

Are You Printing a Cookbook?

Go with 48 Hr Books, because we're the fastest Cookbook Printers around.
From the initial formatting to photo placement, printing and binding styles, we'll give you whatever help you need along the way.

On the outside, a cookbook may look just like any other book. But it's really completely different. If your cookbook's main purpose is for general reference, you may get away with perfect binding (like softcover books). All perfect bound books we turn around in just 48 hours. But most cookbooks are meant for heavy use in the kitchen. When you're up to their elbows in flour, spices, or batter, you want a cookbook that's going to lay flat on your counter. Therefore, most of the cookbooks that we print are Coil Bound. These we turn around in 5 business days. Of course, we do offer rush service, which can speed it up by another day or two.

Help with Formatting your Cookbook

We're developing Templates for a Cookbook. You'll be able to use these as a guide for laying out your cookbook so each recipe is formatted uniformly, making it so much easier for your readers to use.

Full-color Tabs

These have the section titles printed on the tab itself, and a 'teaser' photo on the body of each tab.

Here are a few questions that you'll want to answer when formatting your cookbook:

How am I going to separate each section?

There are several different ways to separate each section of your cookbook. One option that really looks great is having die-cut tabs dividing each section. At 48 Hr Books, we can print your tabs in either black-and-white or full-color. They're a great way to separate the different sections ("Salads", "Entrees", "Desserts", etc.). Plus, you can include full-color photo or a montage of photos of items from that section.

Do I want to include photographs?

Some cookbooks just list recipes, and don't include any photography at all. But many people like having photographs as a visual reference. That doesn't mean you must have a photograph to accompany every recipe. You can have a page or two at the front of each section that shows as many items as you'd like. Full-color photography is a great way to enhance your cookbook with vibrant images of the delicious dishes you have made. We can print photos in black-and-white, too, but they're not nearly as impressive as full-color.

What type of Binding should I choose?

Cookbooks can be perfect bound, case bound (hardcover), or coil bound. It all depends on your personal preference. We can print perfect bound books in 48 hours, so if you are on a deadline, this is a great option. If your cookbook's main purpose is for general reference, perfect binding is good option. If you have an extremely large page count, a case bound book may be the way to go. Plus, the covers are extremely sturdy to last over the years. But most cookbooks are meant for heavy use in the kitchen. When you're up to your elbows in flour, spices, or batter, you want a cookbook that's going to lay flat on your counter. Therefore, most of the cookbooks that we print are coil bound. Please remember that case bound books and coil bound books take 5 business days to print. Of course, we do offer rush service, which can speed it up by another day or two if you are on a deadline.

Help with Cover Design

Just like any great recipe, the most important part of a cookbook is what's inside: the recipes themselves. But there's no denying that a great cover design can really help sell the book. And a poor cover design can turn off potential readers. We offer a low-cost cookbook cover design feature called Create-a-Cover that makes it easy. You simply choose the main elements of your cover, and we put them together for you to help you achieve an elegant cookbook cover design.

Full-color Covers

Beautiful full-color front and back covers are included in our price! For the inside pages, you can stick with black-and-white throughout, or add as much color as you'd like, from just a page or two, to the entire book in full-color ...

Photography

One critical element to all cookbooks is the photography. Sure, the recipes may speak for themselves, but if you add photos of the finished dish, you'll really capture your readers' attention.

Black-and-white photographs don't cost any extra, but you probably want to consider adding color photographs if you can fit it into your budget. You have a couple of options for adding color photography to your cookbook. The least expensive way to do it is to add a montage of photos at the front of each chapter. Depending on how many recipes you have in the chapter, your montage might be a single page or several pages long. Alternatively, you can add color photos to most or all of your recipes, making the book full-color throughout. It makes for a great-looking book, but it's also more expensive this way.

Proofreading

Before we print your cookbooks, we'll send you a PDF Proof to look over and approve. Be sure to look it over carefully. Don't take anything for granted. You've spent a lot of time and effort putting this cookbook together ... take the time to proofread every page carefully. If you approve our proof and there are errors in it, those same errors will be in all of your cookbooks.
