How do I create a PDF file?
If you're running WINDOWS, get PdfFactory by clicking here for instant download and hit "RUN". With this program, you can create your own PDF files.
The free trial version is fully-functional, but it prints an extra line of text on the bottom of each page that says 'PDF created with PDFFactory trial version. www.PdfFactory.com'. In most cases, you'll be able to use the free trial version, and we can delete that extra line of text. If, however, the line of text at the bottom interferes with your words, you should either redesign your book to avoid that extra line of type, or register with PdfFactory (for $50) and it won't add the extra line of text.
Open your file in whatever program you used to create it, and select 'Print.' A Print window will open, and near the top will be a drop-down field for 'Printer Name'. Click on that field, and choose a printer named 'pdfFactory'. Then hit the 'Properties' button on the right. This will open another window with 8 tabs running along the top, of which the first four are important.
- Select 'Setup' and choose your paper size. You can either put in the actual paper size of your book (5.5 x 8.5, for instance) or you can leave the default size of 'Letter', in which case your PDF file will be centered on an 8.5 x 11 sheet.
- Select the 'Metrics' tab, and change the resolution to at least 1200.
- Select the 'Graphics' tab and select 'Downsample Images to' and choose '300 dpi.'
- Select the 'Fonts' tab and select 'Always embed all fonts.'
Now select 'OK' to close the properties window, and select 'OK' to print. A window should open with a preview of your PDF file. If it looks OK, click 'Save' and keep track of where you saved it.
If you're running MACINTOSH, get JawsPDF. This is a $79 program, but it's one of the few that work on a Mac.
Open your file in whatever program you used to create it, and select 'Print.' A Print window will open, and near the top will be a drop-down field for 'Printer Name'. Click on that field, and choose a printer named 'Jaws'.
- Choose your paper size. You can either put in the actual paper size of your book (5.5 x 8.5, for instance) or you can leave the default size of 'Letter', in which case your PDF file will be centered on an 8.5 x 11 sheet.
- Change the resolution to at least 1200.
- 'Downsample Images' to nothing less than 300 dpi.
- Select 'Always embed all fonts.'
- Hit 'Print' and it will create your PDF file.
Do the same with the file for your cover, and any other files you'll be sending us, then email the files to info@48HrBooks.com, or upload through our website. Simply log on with your email address and password, select your order, and hit the "Add Files" button.
For either Windows or Macintosh, you can use Adobe's on-line PDF service to create up to 5 PDF files for free. Make sure you don't downsample graphics below 300 dpi, and embed all fonts.

What size do I make the cover?
So for a 5.375 x 8.375 book that is 120 pages long, the cover should be
8.375 tall, and 11.04 wide (5.375 front + 5.375 back + .27 spine = 11.02).
So for a 8.375 x 10.875 book that is 200 pages long, the cover should be
10.875 tall, and 17.23 wide (8.375 front + 8.375 back + .45 spine = 17.20).
Of course, if your artwork is going to BLEED (go all the way to the edge),
you'll need to have it extend 1/8" BEYOND the edges on top, bottom and side.
Include your title and author name on the spine so when your book is on a bookshelf, the title and author name read from top to bottom.
Do you offer ISBN Numbers and barcodes?
The process takes about a week, though, so you'll need to figure that into your deadline. If you’re in a hurry, have us print the first set of books without an ISBN. We can always print stickers that you can put on the books after you get your ISBN.
Do you offer other types of binding?
Can you print photos? Is there an extra charge?
On short runs, your book is printed digitally, so black-and-white photos on the inside pages will be printed as halftones at 106 lpi. Full-color photos are printed as continuous tones, and are near photographic quality.
On long runs, your book may be printed offset, so black-and-white photos would be printed as halftones at 150 lpi, and the full-color photos are printed at 175 lpi.
