The Bright Shadow of God

By John M. Stewart
I am a university administrator, professor, writer, photographer, a husband, a brother, a son and a musician. I love live theater, music, hikes in the woods, and walks on the beach.

I am also a spiritual sojourner. This book is about life and how my faith impacts and intersects with my life journey.

So… what is the Bright Shadow of God?

It’s an odd term, isn’t it? A shadow should be dark. But scripture tells us that in God there is no darkness, only light. 1 John 1:5 says, “This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.” So, when scripture refers to the “shadow” of His wings, I imagine that shadow must be bright! His Bright Shadow illuminates those dark places, removes question and speculation, and reveals truth. Like a surgical laser uses light to bring healing, God’s light sears into our soul and brings spiritual healing and restoration.

For me, the term The Bright Shadow of God describes those moments in my life of inspiration or insight when the divine meets the everyday. These are most often small “aha” moments when a spiritual truth comes into clearer focus. At other times they can be like that moment with Paul on the road to Damascus… where the blinding light is life altering. Sometimes they come in the form of a dream where that Bright Shadow of God illuminates a place in my life that has remained hidden or dark. In all cases, they are markers on my journey, notes on my map that bring clarity and direction. In short, the Bright Shadow of God is the tangible presence of the Divine in everyday life.

In this book, I share these moments with you in the hope they will resonate. I don’t pretend to know everything… otherwise, why would I need the Bright Shadow of God? I am a sojourner… learning and growing every day. Travel with me.
