Self-Published Author Spotlight: Cameron Harman

August 12, 2021 (Last Updated August 18, 2021)

48 Hour Books

Get to know self-published author, Cameron Harman, as he shares his experience writing his book, Caveman to Philosopher.

About the Author:

I am an eight-year veteran of the U.S Army and served in Afghanistan in 2011-2012. After the military I had a spiritual awakening that changed my life. Free from my PTSD I started a podcast to help share my story with anyone who is suffering the way I had been. My podcast inspired me to write Caveman to Philosopher to further spread my message of hope.

What is the title of your book?

Caveman to Philosopher

What is your book about?

It’s a story about my life as a soldier with PTSD. After the military I learned about meditation and Buddhism. Practicing mindfulness helped with my PTSD symptoms. In this book I offer the reader a look at how I changed my life from misery to freedom.

What inspires you to write?

To put it simply, hope. Hope that someday we can all live without anxiety and depression.

How often do you write?

Now that my book is finished I have taken a break from writing, but more is on the way!

How long have you been writing?

Honestly, I have only been writing for a couple years. I started writing my book just before Covid started.

What, according to you, is the hardest thing about writing?

Staying focused on the task at hand is hard for me. Sitting and hammering out the words can be a chore.

Have you every experiences writer’s block? If so, how long does it last?

Indeed! My blocks would come when I start to get tired of writing and need to take a break. Usually if I start to feel that way I just stop for the day and try again the next day.

Are there any tips you can share to help overcome it?

One thing that I learned a little late in the game is to make an outline for your book. Have what you want to write on paper before starting to type. Know what order you want your thoughts to go in. This helps with over thinking about what to write next.

Describe your writing process. Do you have a routine?

I like to just sit and write my thoughts out as they come. I have started using an outline for my next book project and this is very helpful. I have all the chapters written and notes about what I want for each chapter.

Do you read much, and if so, who are your favorite authors?

I love reading! My favorite authors include, Thich Nhat Hanh, Ram Dass, Eckhart Tolle, and many more.

What is the most important thing about a book in your opinion?

For me personally the book needs to keep my interest. I have read books that get too technical or are to over my head and that is no fun.

Any advice you would like to give to aspiring writers or authors looking to self-publish?

Just go for it! Don’t over think it. Don’t write your book for anyone - just write it for you.

What is the most rewarding thing about printing your book?

Knowing that my book could help someone who really needed it. At times in my life when I was struggling and there were books that helped me through the hard times. I hope that my book can do the same for someone else.
